Jason Bellefleur, Bellefleur Physiotherapy

OBE_40U40 2016 Gala_149What milestone are you celebrating?
I was honoured to be recognized as one of Ottawa’s 2016 Forty Under 40 recipients. This is one of Ottawa’s most prestigious business awards recognizing accomplished and rising business leaders under the age of 40. The Forty Under 40 award has become the symbol of leadership, innovation, business acumen and community involvement in Ottawa, all of which enhances and validates our current and future business leaders.

Provide a brief description of your business.

Bellefleur Physiotherapy is a full service Physiotherapy clinic that helps people live without pain, return to the activities they enjoy doing and live healthier lives. With a focus on personalized one-on-one treatments in private treatment rooms and offering an excellent customer experience, Bellefleur Physiotherapy has built a reputation on professional excellence, being the clinic of choice for physiotherapy and being a sought after employer for Physiotherapists.

What factors have helped you to successfully reach this particular milestone?

Being around like minded people has been instrumental in reaching this particular milestone. Having no business background whatsoever there has been a huge learning curve. That being said, having been a member of the Orléans Chamber of Commerce even before starting my own business was the first step in the process. I learned so much from being around other business owners, hearing about their successes and failures, observing their passion for entrepreneurship and being involved in their community. Always being open minded and continuous learning have been important as well. My business book shelf is getting quite full, but learning things or developing new ideas helps to keep pushing things forward. And with anything, if you don’t have a great team it’s difficult to achieve any success. My colleagues all share in the same vision and we all work hard to achieve a common goal.

What has been your most memorable moment in business?

Being able to provide meaningful employment for the people of Orléans, but more specifically to provide physiotherapists with an alternative business model to what is currently available in private practice in Ottawa.

What’s one interesting thing about your business that people might not be aware of?

Our company values the power of networking, the relationships that we build and the effectiveness of word of mouth referrals. That is why all of our full time physiotherapists participate in a networking group to develop their own name within our brand.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome as a business to reach this milestone?

Quitting my full-time job to enter the uncertainty of launching my own business was probably the biggest challenge. At the time I had a young family and wasn’t trained as a business owner (being a physiotherapist by profession). I had to place a lot of trust in my own abilities and take small steps forward to ensure the business would success.

Describe how your business started, and how it’s changed over the years.

The business started in the living room of my house that I had converted into an office/treatment room. I worked out of my house for 4 months before the brick and mortar clinic at the Orléans Town Centre opened its doors. When the doors of the clinic opened, we were a staff of two – myself and our office admin Tonya, who still works with us almost 3 years later. Now we are a team of 9 employees, including 5 physiotherapists and we are soon going to run out of space in our clinic.

What can we expect from your business in the future? Are there any plans on the horizon you would like people to know about?

Our business is in growth mode and we want to continue pushing the boundaries and changing the mindset within physiotherapy and healthcare businesses.
